Caveman Skin: Back to the roots or natural care?

What is Caveman Skin?
Caveman Skin means returning skin to its natural state. That means no cleanser, no moisturizer, no serums—sometimes not even water. The idea behind it? The skin is supposed to regulate itself and restore its natural barrier function. Many fans swear by fewer pimples, less redness, and a more balanced complexion. Sounds too good to be true?

Why might it work?
Our skin actually has impressive self-healing powers. Without harsh chemicals or harsh cleansers, the skin can stabilize its natural pH, build up its protective lipid layers, and reduce inflammation. Plus, you save money—and who doesn't love that?
But here's the catch
As with any extreme trend, there are downsides. Without daily cleansing, dirt, sweat, and environmental toxins build up on the skin—a perfect breeding ground for acne and clogged pores. People with oily skin or hormonal issues might also quickly notice that the whole thing doesn't feel quite as "natural."
Who is Caveman Skin suitable for?
For people with robust, normal skin that's rarely prone to breakouts, this approach can actually work. But for most of us, gentle, regular care is probably the better option. Balance is the key here.

Back to basics – but with caution!
Caveman skin may be the perfect solution for some, but for most, a moderate routine tailored to their skin type is the safer choice. Because even though we should sometimes just "leave our skin alone," it definitely deserves a little love and care.
Why gentle cleansing can be better
Without any cleansing, dirt, sweat, and excess sebum can clog pores and promote inflammation. That doesn't mean you have to resort to chemicals. There are many gentle cleansers that respect the skin's pH balance and protect the skin barrier. These remove dirt without damaging the skin's natural lipids.

Aquafacial: Deep cleansing without chemicals
An example of a gentle yet thorough cleansing treatment is the Aquafacial. This treatment works completely without harsh chemicals—at least in my beauty salon. I use only glycerin in the water to intensively cleanse and condition the skin at the same time.
Why glycerin is so ideal:
Moisture magnet: Glycerin attracts moisture from the air and stores it in the skin.
Gentle on all skin types: It is extremely well tolerated and also suitable for sensitive skin types.
Strengthens the skin barrier: It helps support the skin's natural protective function and promotes regeneration.
How to protect your pH
Even if you rely on minimalist skincare, your skin's pH should remain stable. Here are a few tips:
Mild cleansers: Choose products with a pH value around 5.5.
No hot water: Water that is too hot can destabilize the pH.
Moisturizers: Glycerin, hyaluronic acid and panthenol help keep the skin barrier intact.
How does the pH of the skin work?
The skin's pH is normally between 4.5 and 5.5 , which is slightly acidic. This acid mantle is crucial for skin health because it:
Offers protection against bacteria and fungi – most pathogens have difficulty multiplying in this acidic environment.
The natural skin barrier is strengthened – important lipids and moisture are retained.
Prevents inflammation and irritation – balanced skin is less prone to redness and irritation.
Why is pH so important?
An unbalanced pH can weaken the skin barrier, leading to dryness, irritation, and even acne. Products with a high pH (e.g., conventional soaps) can damage the acid mantle and make the skin more vulnerable to environmental influences.
Products that respect the pH of the skin:
1. Mild cleansers:
CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser (pH approx. 5.5) – gentle cleansing without drying out.
La Roche-Posay Toleriane Cleanser (pH approx. 5.5) – ideal for sensitive skin.
COSRX Low pH Good Morning Gel Cleanser (pH 5.0-6.0) – removes excess oil without drying out the skin.
2. Toners and essences:
Klairs Supple Preparation Unscented Toner (pH approx. 5.5) – moisturizes and soothes the skin.
Pyunkang Yul Essence Toner (pH approx. 5.5) – intensively moisturizing.
3. Moisturizers:
Bepanthen Sensiderm Cream (pH 5.5) – soothes irritated skin.
Eucerin pH5 Lotion – specially developed for sensitive skin.
4. Acid products (use with caution!):
The Ordinary Lactic Acid 5% + HA (pH approx. 3.6-3.8) – mild exfoliation.
Paula's Choice Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant (pH approx. 3.2-3.8) – deep cleansing and pore refining.
Tips for maintaining a healthy pH level:
Clean gently: Avoid harsh soaps and heavy-foaming cleaners.
Don't over-treat: Too many acids and peels can weaken the skin barrier.
Use pH-balanced products: Pay attention to the pH value in the product description.
Don’t forget sun protection: UV rays can weaken the skin barrier.
Healthy skin doesn't require an over-the-top routine, but neither does it require a complete lack of care. The truth often lies somewhere in the middle – a simple, flexible routine that you can adapt to your lifestyle and skin's needs is key. Your skin is constantly changing, whether due to stress, diet, or the seasons, and your care should reflect that. No product can do everything, but a balanced combination of gentle cleansing, hydration, and protection can make all the difference in the long run. Without any care at all, skin often remains overwhelmed – find the mix that works for you.
